Both liberals and conservatives are fighting imaginary wars that have no real solutions as the problems are not real. Climate change is real but it will take 50 years of technology to solve in the US, Europe and other modern nations. However, in third world countries this will drag on for perhaps one hundred years. 40 years ago Jimmy Carter passed laws to make cars obtain 27 miles per gallon. My current cars average around 21–22 miles per gallon. Plus all the additional traffic signs and left turn lanes and modern cities walling off residential streets probably waste 15–20% auto fuel due to waiting and stopping at all these signs. Auto makers cannot overcome these obstacles unless we force cities to allow more traffic on residential streets and use more parallel roads as we did 100 years ago. We have national programs to reduce energy construction in new government buildings that add 15% additional costs but architects continue to build buildings with massive windows and minimal insulation in the walls. 40 years ago I typically added 20–25% more horsepower to every fan and pump due to architects using poor building insulation, cheap window glass and inadequate space to fit this equipment. As a state engineer I have observed the need to knock down walls to hide air conditioning equipment that would not work. Almost 15 years ago the National Building code made it illegal for architects to design buildings such that equipment could not physically be installed to work as intended. Manufacturer data on clearances and servicing is ignored by architects and we should criminally prosecute the entire profession to stop this negligent practice. Minnesota has a law for 15 years requiring new and remodeled government buildings to use 30% less energy than what the Energy Code Allows. Most architects design buildings walls taller to show the window area is reduced based on more wall area. The Andersen Building on the State Capitol Complex did not have enough space to use energy efficient fans and duct design. The result is there is somewhere around 900 horsepower of fan motors. An efficient design allowing adequate space for equipment and ductwork in the ceilings could probably save 400 horsepower. We have laws requiring that fire hydrants be tested to verify they provide adequate water to fight fires. I have found most are never tested and observed broken ones shutdown. I have read many articles that indicate the about 25% of all fire sprinkler systems have inadequate water flow and organic obstructions growing in the piping. Perhaps 20–25% of fire alarm systems, smoke detectors in large buildings are defective and left unrepaired. Almost 100 years ago it was common to wrap copper wire with paper and install inside a lead pipe. The pipe was filled with oil and glass ferals installed on each end to keep the two metals from touching each other. The State Capitol Complex in Minnesota has many of these feeders with 13,800 volts of electricity and have not been inspected for decades. I hope you take the time to read this and understand we need to do something about this and like right now.
